A senior-year engineering launchpad

Build across four engineering worlds.

Eight projects that turn an Elegoo Mega 2560 starter kit into experiments in flight, structures, machines, and intelligent systems.

THE BASE KIT · MEGA 2560 R3

Start with the kit. Add only what the experiment needs.

The official Mega 2560 tutorial is the fastest way to learn each module before combining them.

The pictured “Most Complete” kit commonly covers the Mega board, breadboard, jumpers, LEDs, LCD, DHT11, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, servo, DC motor, stepper motor with ULN2003 driver, and GY-521 motion module. Confirm the tray contents before buying duplicates.

01Learn one module

Run the matching Elegoo lesson and verify the wiring.

02Build the physical model

Use cardboard first; upgrade to balsa only after the geometry works.

03Measure, change, repeat

Save results, graph them, and explain why the design improved.

01 / Aeronautical

Airflow & flight data

Turn moving air into a voltage, then turn the voltage into evidence. These projects connect sensor calibration, fluid dynamics, drag, lift, and flight-test thinking.

Starter → Intermediate2–3 sessions

DIY anemometer + wing test rig

Use a small DC motor as a generator, calibrate its output against fan settings, then compare airflow around paper airfoils in a cardboard test section.

Model rocket / glider flight recorder

Log motion, temperature, and time to a microSD card. Start by hand-carrying the recorder through a known path; only then mount it securely in a large foam glider or supervised model-rocket payload.

PORTFOLIO
Show the engineering, not just the gadget.

Plot sensor output against fan setting or flight time. Include a calibration method, one failed design, the revised geometry, and a short limits-and-uncertainty section.

02 / Civil

Structures under stress

Build a physical bridge, establish a baseline, and watch displacement and vibration change as load moves across it.

Intermediate3–4 sessions

Instrumented bridge load test

Mount the HC-SR04 beneath a truss bridge and measure midspan deflection while adding known loads. Use green, yellow, and red LEDs to communicate thresholds.

Vibration signature lab

Tap or excite the bridge consistently, record three-axis acceleration, and compare the frequency response before and after adding mass or loosening one connection.

DESIGN TEST
Which structure gives the best stiffness-to-mass ratio?

Build two bridge geometries with the same material allowance. Weigh each, load each to the same limit, and compare deflection per gram of structure.

03 / Mechanical

Motion with intent

Link mechanisms, actuators, and feedback. The first build emphasizes repeatable arm motion; the second adds mobile decision-making.

Record-and-play robot arm

Teach an arm a sequence with potentiometers, then replay the motion. Begin with a one-joint cardboard linkage and the kit servo before scaling to a four-axis frame.

Obstacle-avoiding rover

Put the ultrasonic sensor on a servo “head,” scan left and right, then steer toward open space. Tune thresholds, motor speed, and turn duration like a controls engineer.

CONTROLS
Replace “turn for 400 ms” with a measurable target.

Add marks to a wheel, collect video at slow speed, estimate wheel rotation, and quantify how battery voltage changes turning accuracy.

04 / Intelligent systems

Sensors become decisions

Collect a dataset, train or design a classifier, then test where it fails. That full loop is the connection between embedded systems, computer science, and AI.

TinyML gesture classifier

Record labeled accelerometer gestures, extract motion features, train a compact neural network, and use its prediction to control an LED, servo, or robot mode.

Bridge damage classifier

Combine the civil model with an intelligent-systems workflow: capture “baseline” and “changed” vibration samples, train a binary model, and report false alarms—not just accuracy.

LUDDY-STYLE
Document the data lifecycle.

Define the classes, collection protocol, train/test split, confusion matrix, and failure cases. A model that admits its limits is stronger than a demo that only shows one success.
